Organ and Tissue Donation

Organ transplantation is considered one of the modern miracles of medicine. Today, thousands of people are leading full and productive lives because of organ and tissue donation. However, due to a drastic shortage of donor organs, many of those waiting for a transplant will not have this opportunity.

Did you know that:

  • More than 80,000 people are waiting for life-saving organ transplants - 2,100 are here in New Jersey
  • Every 13 minutes, another name is added to the transplant waiting list
  • Every day, 17 people die while waiting
  • One organ donor can save the lives of eight people
  • One tissue donor can enhance the lives of 75 others

Somerset Medical Center works closely with The Sharing Network, a NJ-based nonprofit agency whose sole purpose is to save lives through the recovery of donor organs and tissues suitable for transplantation.

In New Jersey, you can sign the back of your driver's license if you wish to be an organ donor. It is also very important to discuss your wishes with your family, as they are often faced with the final decision about organ donation.
